| WELDED FORGED BOLSTER
This method of making kitchen knives is in very wide-spread
use throughout the world, but only a few manufacturers in the Far East
dare to claim that it can produce forged knives. In fact, this method
of construction is used by the major Western cutlery manufacturers,
but they do not say that these knives are forged. To get round the
accusation of using improper terminology, the Chinese have invented
the "fully forged" concept which means that the metal part
is in one piece.
The technique used consists of assembling three metal
parts (tang, bolster and blade) of which only the bolster is made by
forging. The tang and blade made by lamination (cutting them out of
a strip of steel ) are welded to the forged bolster.
This method uses forging solely for its ability of
producing parts that are solid; other methods such as sintering can
produce the same result. |
