The “wipers“ clean
and pack the knives in their cases, and the “shop boys“ prepare
the supplies ready for the outworkers so that the whole long process can
start again, while the “manufacturer and trader“ pays the various
workers and markets the finished products.
This organisation based on dividing the work up (“piece work“) enabled
several generations of cutlery workers to develop an active tradition of mutual
support, now expressed in a traditionally strong trade union commitment.
